Clear Mountain Bank Warns Consumers of Telephone Scam
Bruceton Mills, WV, July 31, 2008 – Clear Mountain Bank is warning consumers to beware of recent “vishing” telephone calls. These calls appear to come from Clear Mountain Bank, but are actually made by scammers attempting to gather personal financial information from individuals. The calls may even display a Clear Mountain Bank phone line on caller ID systems.
The phone calls contain a pre-recorded message claiming to be from Clear Mountain Bank. The message indicates that the consumers Debit Card has been deactivated, and asks consumers to call a “customer service” number to re-activate the card. Consumers are then asked to reveal personal information, such as Debit card account numbers and PINs.
Clear Mountain Bank does not call or email customers asking for personal identifying information. Clear Mountain Bank advises its customers not to communicate any non-public personal information by telephone or email.
“Vishing” is a new version of the familiar “phishing” email scams. “Vishing” involves scammers contacting consumers via telephone or email, and asking the consumers to call a “customer service” phone number. Those who call the number are asked to provide personal financial information, such as account numbers, passwords and PINs. The number of “vishing” scams is rising nationwide and these scams have included all types of businesses in all regions of the country.
Clear Mountain Bank responded quickly to this event and reassures its customers that there has not been any breach of the bank’s systems and no customer data has been compromised. In the event that any customer has unknowingly revealed any personal information, the bank will work with them to rectify the situation as quickly as possible, at no cost to the customer. Customers will not be held liable for funds taken from their accounts through fraudulent or unauthorized means.
